Disability

Long-Term Disability

Long term insurance supplements your income should you become totally disabled and cannot work for a period of time, depneding on your policy. A total disability is defined as a disability that keeps you from being able to perform at least one of the essential duties of your profession for at least twenty-four months. This benefit covers you for as long as you are unable to perform one or more duties of any job. The benefit payed out can equal sixty percent of your normal pay, and can include payments into your retirement account. Long term disabilities will only kick in after your short term disability insurance is exhausted and will continue until age sixty-five, your retirement age, or you return to work, depending on your policy specifics. Contact us to help you decide which coverage is in your best interest. Unlike most insurance agents, YOU are our primary concern, not the carrier. Here at Blue Atlantic Insurance Group we are more than insurance agents.

As with long term disability, some things to consider when purchasing a disability insurance policy:

  • Do they consider you disabled if you can no longer perform you usual duties, or unable to work at any job?
  • Do you have to be totally disabled or do they cover partial disability?
  • When will payments begin?
  • Do they offer residual benefits? These would pay out the difference between your new job and the one you can no longer perform due to a disability.
  • Does it allow for cost of living increases?
  • How long will you be covered?
  • Does the policy contain a “waiver of premium”?

Short Term Disability

Short term disability insurance pays you a percentage of your wages should you become unable to work for a short period of time because of illness or injury. Normally the pay out is between fifty and sixty-six percent of your normal wages for thirteen to fifty-two weeks.

With most policies, benefits can begin within one day to two weeks. The exact time it takes to begin benefit disbursement will be effected by whether you are collecting benefits due to an injury or an illness. Illnesses take longer to pay out because it normally takes longer to determine if it is going to be a debilitating condition.

As with short term disability, some things to consider when purchasing a disability insurance policy:

  • Do they consider you disabled if you can no longer perform you usual duties, or unable to work at any job?
  • Do you have to be totally disabled or do they cover partial disability?
  • Will I receive benefits for a short time after retuning to the work force? It is possible to receive benefits for a short time after returning to work.
  • When will payments begin? For injuries, the delay time is around two weeks, for illnesses the delay time is much longer.
  • Do they offer residual benefits? These would pay out the difference between your new job and the one you can no longer perform due to a disability.
  • Does it allow for cost of living increases? This becomes more important as you may be out of work for an unknown amount of time.
  • How long will you be covered?
  • Does the policy contain a “waiver of premium”? This guarantees that your insurance premiums will be paid while you are disabled so that your insurance coverage is not dropped.
